From whom did the Academy receive its charter?

The Academy received its charter from the Arizona State Board of Charter Schools. As a charter school, Veritas Preparatory Academy is a public school, run independently.

What marks the spirit and purpose of Veritas Preparatory Academy?

The Academy is a traditional liberal arts school with small classes and a core curriculum designed for university- and college-bound students.  Its purposed is to educate young people for a lifelong pursuit of learning.

One principal underlying assumption of the Academy is that each of our students has a natural affinity for all that is knowable and of lasting value summarized by the triad: truth, beauty and goodness (the Verum, Pulchrum, Bonum of the school logo). The other is that each of our students has a rightful claim to the rich cultural heritage identifiable with Western Civilization and its chief historical sources Athens, Jerusalem, and Rome (the Athenae, Hierusalem, Roma of the other half of the logo).

All students at the Academy take 6 years of the following: Fine Arts -- including Music Performance and Theory, Studio Art, Poetry, and Drama; Math and Science -- including Calculus, Biology, Chemistry and Physics; Language -- including 2 years of Latin and 4 years of Modern Language; and English and History.

In the 9th through 12th grades, English and History are combined in our Humane Letters Seminars: these are 2-hour long, daily seminars, directed Socratically and revolving around readings from Western Civilization's best works in philosophy, drama, history, autobiography, poetry, novels, and essays. Students learn to read carefully, discuss clearly, and write coherently.

Does the Academy charge tuition?

No. Veritas is a public charter school and charges no tuition. But the school does ask families for contributions to the operating and capital funds. Families are also encouraged to use the state public school tax credit as a donation to the extracurricular programs.

These contributions support extra-curricular activities and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax reduction - up to $200 for Heads of Household or single parent families and up to $400 for two-parent families filing jointly. Anyone can give to VPA and receive a tax credit, not just families. Please encourage others you know to make a contribution to VPA.

What is the Academy's curriculum?

Please see our Curriculum page for details.

What is the school's enrollment?

The current school's 2012-2013 enrollment is approximately 600 students.

Who makes decisions at the school?

Operational decisions at the Academy are made by the Board of Directors at their monthly meeting or by the Headmaster who governs daily operations. Decisions are made under the advisement of faculty, parents, students and other members of the school's community of learners. Broader decisions, including matters of curriculum and governance, are made by Great Hearts Academies.

How can parents be involved in the direction of the school?

Parents at VPA can get involved in the (VPO) Veritas Parent Organization, a group that organizes activities for students and families, expresses appreciation for the teachers, and makes material donations to the school. Parents are invited to provide input at monthly meetings of the Board of Directors. Service to the school is welcomed and encouraged. VPA also depends the financial support of its parents through the Community Investment and Tax Credit campaigns.

What are the rules and regulations of the school?

The rules and regulations governing life at the school are included in the Academy's Family Handbook which is distributed to each family with a child enrolled in the school. You can download the full Family Handbook at the Community Info section of this website. Additional copies are also available at the school office.

How do I enroll my student in VPA?

Great Hearts Academies is a non-profit network of public charter schools dedicated to improving education in the Phoenix metropolitan area by developing excelling preparatory academies.  As such, Great Hearts is able to provide our families with a top-tier preparatory education in a fully public and tuition-free setting.

Our Open Enrollment period is NOT first-come, first served. If, for any grade level, the number of applicants exceeds the number of openings, there will be a lottery to determine enrollment and waitlist numbers. Only applications submitted during the OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD are included within that lottery pool. Lotteries will be held in January, and results will be available to view in mid January (dates pending for both events).
